The Natural Resource Enterprises program was founded at Mississippi State University by the Forest and Wildlife Research Center, Cooperative Extension Service, and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. The Natural Resource Enterprises program helps landowners develop recreational businesses using sound business and wildlife habitat management strategies. The Natural Resource Enterprises program holds several landowner workshops per year to help landowners develop recreational businesses using sound business and wildlife habitat management strategies. Workshops are typically held on privately-owned property that is managed for agriculture, forestry, or other conventional land use and has a successfully integrated fee-access recreational enterprise(s) with examples of habitat management techniques. Workshop presentations on wildlife habitat and pond management, business management, developing a natural resource enterprise, and other issues are given by specialists. The Newton workshop was held at the Mississippi State University Coastal Plains MAFES farm, and featured a tour of the recreational and habitat demonstrations on the grounds, which include nature trail design, pond construction, outdoor recreation opportunities, and prairie restoration.
